EHRs provide a central repository of data. A lot of data. With so much data available, what is the best way to synthesize it into actionable information that supports perioperative operations? Hospital IQ has created collaborative partnerships with all the top EHRs such as Allscripts, Cerner Surginet®, and Epic that allow us to seamlessly integrate with their systems to create a consolidated view of operations.

By combining the rich data from the EHR and any other third-party or homegrown system a hospital uses with our AI-driven prescriptive recommendations and predictions, Hospital IQ enables hospitals to promote operational excellence, create systemness, and boost frontline staff efficiency.

Let’s dive into just how we can optimize your existing systems by examining our partnership with Cerner.

Hospital IQ and Cerner Surginet

Cerner Surginet already helps manage patient care through the surgical process. Automation, streamlined workflows, intuitive scheduling, documentation management, and reporting tools help monitor and improve the way care is delivered through the perioperative unit. When you layer on Hospital IQ, it’s easy to enhance existing workflows to mine and analyze data from Surginet for a more efficient way to work every day. The seamless integration provides users with advanced capabilities and intelligence to improve perioperative operational excellence.

Cerner Surginet and Hospital IQ work together to understand common perioperative challenges and offer solutions that focus on sustainable change and outcomes. The integration is scalable across a facility or health system, making it simple to share consistent, accurate patient information throughout the organization, schedule with ease, and drive improvement across three main perioperative performance areas:

  1. Improve block release practices with AI-driven recommendations

Most perioperative departments rely on standard policies to automate block releases 24 to 72 hours in advance. While this benefits the blockholder, allowing them ample time to book a case, there is limited time to fill an open block, leading to OR underutilization. Surgeons and schedulers may know they are not going to use time but communicating that gap and working to find a replacement procedure to fill the time is manual and not well coordinated.

The Cerner / Hospital IQ integration monitors data from Surginet to predict the likelihood that a block will not be used and makes a recommendation to release the block with several weeks’ notice for it to be filled. It automates the scheduler’s workflow, with much less effort, communicating with surgeons and schedulers via mobile or email notifications if it predicts that the time won’t be used.

  1. Increase transparency and improve access to OR time with a virtual marketplace

Modern surgery is performed with incredible high-tech, high-end equipment, and yet the OR is still scheduled with sticky notes, spreadsheets, and binders. Hospital IQ’s virtual marketplace offers an electronic portal to see available time across the entire hospital or health system.

It is a visual, and simple way to look for available OR time, request it, or submit for placement on a waitlist that doesn’t overburden schedulers. Users on mobile or desktop can easily filter criteria by their desired time, location, specialty, etc. It supports OR schedulers with a streamlined, organized platform to manage requests and releases. Once the scheduler reviews and approves or rejects any submissions, the platform communicates back to the requestor with a simple notification. Schedulers are also given customizable performance KPIs for prioritization when there are multiple requests for blocks to provide a data-supported decision and rationalization for who gets the time.

  1. Efficient oversight of perioperative performance

The integration offers best-in-class tools to understand block utilization and govern reallocation recommendations based on performance data to support long-term perioperative suite management and objectives. Surgeon scorecards, distributed through the platform and substantiated by data, give surgeons insights on their performance measured on predetermined metrics and compared to peers. Executive reports can look at service lines and location to understand volume and utilization to support governance committee meetings and create systemness, maximizing capacity and utilization across the system.

Additionally, unexpected bottlenecks, ORs running longer than expected, PACU holds, and backups all impact perioperative operations. While leadership and teams attempt to make the most of the data available, often it is outdated by the time it is used, or not trusted by all stakeholders, to properly manage the day and predict issues. When real-time performance data is easily accessible, it arms stakeholders with tools to better assess the day. Whether it’s during huddles or on boards, data is organized so everyone can quickly see what is currently happening and be alerted to potential bottlenecks throughout the surgical day. This gives leadership reliable intel to predict PACU or OR holds and capacity issues for today and tomorrow and to examine what went right or yesterday to help correct course.
