Greater Baltimore Medical Center Goes Online with Hospital IQ
January 29, 2014
Hospital IQ, a leader in improving hospital quality of care and efficiency through software, has announced that Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC), the hospital of the GBMC HealthCare System, has successfully deployed its cloud-based solution. GBMC is a 255-bed acute care medical center that manages more than 26,700 inpatient cases and 60,000 emergency room visits annually.
“We are honored to help GBMC improve patient quality and operational efficiency by helping them identify and reduce census variability,” said Rich Krueger, CEO of Hospital IQ. “GBMC is a widely renowned, respected, and innovative hospital system and was an early adopter of the principles of variability management developed by the non-profit Institute of Healthcare Optimization (IHO). We are pleased to help take this practice to a new level.”
Hospital IQ’s unique cloud-based software automates the variability methodology as developed by IHO, which provides hospitals the capability to dramatically improve patient outcomes while optimizing resource utilization. The comprehensive system:
- Collects and analyzes hospital-specific data from a variety of sources
- Provides easy to use what-if analysis that quantifies quality and cost improvements
- Ensures improved hospital operations
- Reports on key metrics associated with an improvement plan.
Greater Baltimore Medical Center chose to implement Hospital IQ now to further the results achieved when they first partnered with IHO in 2011. By leveraging these findings and instituting a real-time automated continuous improvement platform specific to their environment, GBMC expects to improve its operational margin by $5M per year while ensuring that over 96% of surgical patients will be guaranteed a bed in the optimal level of care within clinically acceptable times.
This approach has been proven to reduce readmissions, length of stay, hospital acquired infections, and overcrowding as recently reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.
“Our environment is very complex and providing the highest possible level of care is imperative for us. Given that our patient demand patterns change in time, using the Hospital IQ software provides us with a self-sustainable system to adjust to these changes, and helps us identify and evaluate the impact of the improvements we make”, said Dr. John Chessare, President and CEO of GBMC. “We are very delighted to have a tool such as Hospital IQ that allows us to achieve our main goals in patient centeredness and efficiency,” continued Dr. Chessare.
